StudioCanal used CinemaCon in Las Vegas to unveil a bold slate of new films, surprising attendees with both franchise follow-ups and genre revivals. The production company teased big-name properties without offering details, setting the stage for a busy year ahead for the European studio.

StudioCanal confirms development of Escape From New York reboot

One of the biggest revelations was that a fresh take on John Carpenter’s cult classic Escape From New York is now in development at StudioCanal. The announcement came early in the CinemaCon presentation and provided few specifics.

The original 1981 film made Snake Plissken an icon. Kurt Russell famously played the antihero — an ex-soldier turned convict sent into Manhattan, which has become a maximum security prison, to rescue the president.

  • Reboot status: StudioCanal is developing the project, but has not named a director or cast.
  • Premise reference: The new version is expected to draw from the original’s hostage-rescue storyline.
  • Fan interest: The property’s cult status makes the reboot a high-profile gamble.

Paddington returns: StudioCanal announces Paddington 4

StudioCanal also confirmed a fourth Paddington film is underway. Executives revealed little else during the show, though they emphasized a creative team is already being assembled.

What we know about Paddington 4 and the franchise

  • Creative hires: StudioCanal said it has engaged prominent comedy writers for the screenplay.
  • Names withheld: The company did not disclose writer identities or a release window.
  • Source material: The movies are based on Michael Bond’s beloved children’s books about a marmalade-loving bear.

The Paddington series has been a commercial success. The three previous entries — Paddington (2014), Paddington 2 (2017) and Paddington in Peru (2024) — together grossed about $730 million worldwide. StudioCanal fully finances those films, with Sony handling distribution in territories including the United States.

Other remakes and adaptations on StudioCanal’s slate

The presentation also highlighted several other projects in various stages of development. The selection mixes remakes, literary adaptations and original thrillers.

  • The Howling — a remake of the 1981 werewolf horror classic.
  • The Midnight Library — an adaptation of the best-selling novel, moving from page to screen.
  • The Mannequin — described by StudioCanal as an original, violent, high-stakes thriller set to star Melissa Leo.

Clips and market footage shown at CinemaCon

To close its presentation, StudioCanal screened exclusive footage from several upcoming titles. The clips spanned family animation, horror and edgy comedy.

  • Shaun the Sheep: Teasers for Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom were shown.
  • Ice Cream Man: Eli Roth’s new slasher was presented in a hard-edged sneak peek.
  • Dark comedy: Excerpts from the provocatively titled Everybody Wants to F*ck Me rounded out the reel.
