Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are broadening their reach in independent cinema with a new label designed to lift up emerging filmmakers. The initiative aims to connect fresh voices with theatrical resources and an audience hungry for high-quality indie stories.

Artists Equity launches dedicated indie banner

Affleck and Damon’s company, Artists Equity, has unveiled Artists Equity Independent Pictures (AEIP). The new arm focuses on platforming rising directors and writers in the independent film market. The effort is supported by an independent theatrical film fund to help move projects from page to screen.

Leadership and creative oversight

Jennifer Westin will run AEIP’s day-to-day creative and production work. She will report to Amy Baer, the president of film and television at Artists Equity. Together, the team will scout projects, shepherd development, and prepare indie films for theatrical release.

AEIP’s initial film slate and key collaborators

AEIP has announced several early projects that underline its commitment to established talent and new filmmakers.

  • A Woman in the Sun — The directorial debut of screenwriter Julia Cox, this family drama features Renée Zellweger, Sissy Spacek and Mia Threapleton.
  • Downriver — Directed by Sam Jones with a screenplay by Carl Hiaasen. Production partners include Hungry Bull Productions and Groundswell Productions.

Producers and executive producers attached include Seth Caplan, Dori Rath, Joseph Restaino, Michael London and backers such as William P. Foley II. The project list reflects collaboration between indie-minded producers and more established financiers.

Other Artists Equity films to watch

AEIP sits alongside Artists Equity’s broader slate, which mixes studio-level names with independent sensibilities.

  • Animals — Ben Affleck stars in and directs this thriller, co-written with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray. The film is slated for Netflix release on Oct. 9 and also stars Steven Yeun, Kerry Washington and Gillian Anderson.
  • Free Byrd — Dwayne Johnson leads as a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman hiding a dementia diagnosis while preparing for one last jump. Greg Kwedar, director of Sing Sing, is attached to direct.
  • Past and planned Artists Equity titles include Air, Small Things Like These, The Rip, The Accountant 2, The Instigators and Unstoppable.

Why this matters for indie filmmakers and audiences

Affleck and Damon have cited independent cinema as pivotal to their careers. AEIP seeks to create a pipeline for new talent, offering creative support and theatrical access that can be rare for small filmmakers.

The label’s strategy blends industry relationships with targeted financing, aiming to reach audiences who still value theatrical premieres and thoughtful storytelling.

Founding background and company roots

Artists Equity launched in 2022, co-founded by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and financier Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital. The company’s first production, the 2023 sports drama Air, was directed by Affleck and starred an ensemble cast. That film marked the banner’s move into larger-scale releases while maintaining an interest in independent film voices.
