The death of former Lostprophets singer Ian Watkins inside Wakefield Prison has prompted new legal action and renewed scrutiny of prison safety. One of the men charged over the October killing has entered a not guilty plea as courts set timelines for a complex criminal case. The developments add fresh chapters to a story that has gripped Britain for more than a decade.
Court appearance and the plea entered in Leeds
On November 12, Samuel Dodsworth appeared at Leeds Crown Court by video link from Wakefield Prison. He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, including the alleged murder of Ian Watkins and an accusation of possessing a makeshift blade on the day of the attack.

Dodsworth’s case has been given a trial date of May 5, 2026. A preliminary case management hearing is listed for February 2, 2026. The court proceedings will shape evidence disclosure and witness arrangements over the next months.
Second defendant refused remote attendance
Rashid “Rico” Gedel, 25, is the other inmate charged in connection with the killing. He was due to appear by video at the same hearing but refused to leave his cell. Gedel insisted on an in-person appearance.
Because he would not attend remotely, no plea was formally recorded for him on November 12. Both men remain in custody as the pre-trial process continues.
What the coroner found about Watkins’ death
The coroner’s report states that Watkins was stabbed in the neck inside his cell. He suffered severe blood loss and was pronounced dead when emergency teams reached him.
The fatal injury was a neck wound, according to the report. This finding underpins the murder charges that followed a prison lockdown and an immediate police response.
Sequence of events inside Wakefield Prison
- October 11: Ian Watkins was attacked and later died from stab wounds.
- Prison went into lockdown after the incident.
- Two inmates were arrested at the scene and taken into custody.
- Two days later, police charged Gedel and Dodsworth with murder.
Background: Watkins’ conviction and sentence
Watkins was convicted in 2013 for multiple child sex offenses. He received a long sentence: 29 years in prison plus 6 years on licence.
Police investigations revealed a catalogue of offences. In court, Watkins admitted to a range of offences that shocked the public and prompted lengthy media coverage.
Offences he pleaded guilty to in 2013
- Attempted rape of an infant.
- Conspiracy to rape a child.
- Multiple counts of sexual assault on children.
- Other related sexual offences and possession of child sexual abuse material.
How authorities linked Watkins to the offences
Initial warnings came from his then-partner, Joanne Mjadzelics. She tried to alert police from 2008 onwards about disturbing images and messages he shared.
Despite early complaints, robust police action only followed in 2012. A search linked to alleged drug activity uncovered child pornography at his home. That discovery triggered the subsequent sex crime investigation.
Previous violence against Watkins in prison
Watkins had been attacked before the fatal incident. In 2023 he was reportedly held hostage and brutally assaulted over a claimed drug debt.
That earlier assault left him with what authorities called life-threatening injuries. Reports described him being stabbed with a sharpened toilet brush during that attack.
Who the accused are and how they are described in court records
- Samuel Dodsworth — 43, pleaded not guilty via video link. Denies possession of a makeshift weapon on the day Watkins was killed.
- Rashid “Rico” Gedel — 25, refused video attendance and did not enter a plea that day.
Both men face murder charges and will return to court as the case schedule progresses.
