Colorado Could Lockdown Again Unless We All “Do Better”

Colorado Governor Jared Polis has not been mincing words recently, taking aim and calling out those who refuse to wear masks.

An upward trend is establishing itself in the numbers for Colorado’s Coronavirus Pandemic. This is worrisome for experts and Colorado Governor Jared Polis. It is a gradual curve, however, it will exponentially spiral out of control without proper countermeasures, as shown by numbers in Texas, Arizona, Florida, and California over the past few weeks.

“What we are doing is close, but it isn’t quite working…we need to do better,” said Governor Polis at a press conference on Tuesday. “The underlying message here is that cases are growing slowly, but consistently and that is the wrong trend…If we do these things successfully [social distancing and masks] we will defeat the virus in Colorado, but we are continually coming up a bit short.”

The past eleven days have seen a consistent rise in cases with over 400 being added today. Currently, there are 252 hospitalized COVID across the state out of a possible ICU capacity of 552. Polis stated that the hope is to avoid having to delay elected surgeries to free up beds.

“This is a marathon, not a sprint — this is not something Coloradans should expect to be over in a day, a week or a month,” said Gov. Polis.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis updates the news media Friday, April 17, 2020 from the governor’s residence at Boettcher Mansion in Denver on the state’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Big Picture:

  • The press conference came as a warning to Colorado, but one that rings hollow as Gov. Polis repeated “[it’s] your choice to wear a mask,” like a personal mantra.
  • After receiving backlash for calling citizens who refuse to wear masks “selfish bastards,” it seems now he is swinging back to a more libertarian/personal freedom position on the issue.
  • Unfortunately, wearing a mask isn’t an issue regarding personal freedom. Drunk driving is illegal in this country because when you drive drunk, you are not only putting your life in danger but the lives of many others as well. This is dually applicable with masks, as you are putting not only your own health at risk but the health of everyone around you as well.
  • According to an upcoming VOX report, physicians indicate that patients hospitalized for Coronavirus are experiencing high rates of blood clots that can cause strokes, heart attacks, lung blockages, and other complications.
  • One study published in March found that out of 416 hospitalized Covid-19 patients, 19% showed signs of permanent heart damage.
  • Physicians have also found evidence of lung scarring in Coronavirus patients — some CT scans show Coronavirus patients have light gray patches on their lungs called “ground-glass opacities,” which don’t always heal. One Chinese study found the patches in 77% of patients, according to the same upcoming VOX report.

Next Steps:

  • Colorado is on an upward trajectory since our government is now too scared of its conservative constituency there will (most likely) not be a mask mandate that is meaningful.
  • A mask mandate as a tool is only effective if there are reasonable enforcement mechanisms, clerks at the 7/11 shouldn’t be subjected to fighting with selfish bastards about a piece of fabric.
  • It’s entirely up to us now.
  • PPP loans are still available, and Gov. Polis encouraged people to apply at choosecolorado.com
  • We cannot get complacent, our neighboring states are a warning … we cannot allow that to happen in Colorado.”
