Save Our Stages: A Conversation about the Future of Independent Venues

Independent venues are in trouble. No matter how many crowd-funding campaigns we plan something needs to change.

There is a frightening statistic making the rounds that if nothing changes immediately and we don’t get our collective act together, almost 90% of independent venues will have to close permanently due to COVID-19. This, according to a new NIVA survey, is alarming.

Generally speaking, this is the exact kind of fallout we would expect from an industry downturn. The big names of the industry have the money to preserve their stronghold, and the small and local indie venues/promoters suffer the most.

NIVA has played a big role in strengthening the position of many of these independent operations, but there is plenty of work to be done. So join The Music District and (SALT) Mag For a Facebook Live conversation on the future of live music in Colorado on Thursday, July 9th with Dani Grant, owner of the Mishawaka Amphitheater and member of the Reopen Every Venue Safely (REVS) initiative leadership team; Laura Wilson, Washington’s / The Armory and member of the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA); and Marc Hogan, Senior Staff Writer for Pitchfork, who recently profiled the challenges of independent venues across the country.

We will be discussing what a return to live music could look like, how independent venues are marking it through COVID-19 and what you can do to help and support the community around you.
