Brian James Kittrell: Bloodshot Heart: A Compendium of Heartbreak Review

Brian James Kittrell (of the band Maxwell Mud) begins his new solo album by knocking the wind out of you with the line, “I’m all out of rope again or I’d hang myself,”  sung in a rich baritone. Even in this track, clearly designed to bum you out, Kittrell achieves something much more elusive – he captures the feeling of melancholy. Melancholy and nostalgia are the currency of this EP, and boy is it rich. These timeless feelings are notoriously difficult to articulate. Kittrell displays a sensibility and emotional maturity that would place this album comfortably at home in any generation.
